And yet again, I have some sad news. It feels that every time I post a blog it starts with bad news. Last night, one of our host moms' died. She was 9 months pregnant, but the baby survived and is doing well. We are assuming there were complications during labor, but these are only speculations. This young mother leaves behind a husband and an 11 year old son. The funeral was today, but we were advised not to go out of respect for the family. My friend Lynelle has been staying with the family and we are not sure if she will continue living there or move to a different house. It is definitely a sad time here as we are trying to figure out how to navigate the situation and your prayers are greatly appreciated.
On to happier news--we spent the last week traveling through Nicaragua and had a great time. We hit 4 cities in 4 days. Our first stop was Leon, where we stayed in my favorite hotel. Not only did it have warm (ish) showers and air conditioning, it had a lot of "Spanish" charm like wooden panel floorboards and brightly painted walls. We did a lot of sightseeing and saw the oldest cathedral in Central America. Our second stop was Managua and we stayed in the Nehemiah Center. This is a headquarter-type place that helps many non-profit organizations in Nicaragua. We visited a volcano, which is probably one of the coolest things I have seen, even though it smelled terrible. Because it is an active volcano, there was a huge cloud of sulfur smoke that did not smell good. Day number 3 brought us to Granada, where we toured the city in horse-drawn carriages. We had the craziest tour guide, who wore a traditional Nicaraguan clothes and loved to sing spontaneous songs about the history of Granada. Our last stop was Masaya, where we spent the majority of the afternoon in the largest artisan market in the country. That night we went out to a nice dinner as a group and saw many different traditional dances. It was such a fun trip and Nicaragua is much more tourist-friendly than Tegucigalpa.
Now it's back to reality...and back to the 6 page paper I have to write for Tuesday :)
